What is IELTS?

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System which is one of the most widely accepted scores for language skills in countries like the USA, UK, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia, and other parts of the world as well.

  • Reading ability
  • Writing ability
  • Speaking ability and
  • Listening ability

The score is given between 0 to 9 where 0 is the lowest band and 9 being the highest band given to the experts in the language.

The scores of an IELTS examination are assigned, in terms of band, and the range of the score is from 0 to 9 in which the O score is given to the least performing, and 9 band is given to the expert in the language.

The passing score of the candidate or the minimum score requirement will depend on the University to which the candidate has applied or the immigration program through which he is applying for selection.

However, a score of 6 is a competent score and is the least required score at most of the places. The test is usually conducted in the above mentioned 4 categories and a candidate has to qualify in all.

IELTS Test Components

The test has 4 components even as the total time taken to complete the test is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

The IELTS Reading test contains 40 questions. Each correctly answered question fetches 1 mark. Therefore, the maximum score you can achieve is 40. A band score ranging from Band 1 to Band 9 is then awarded on the basis of this score.

Time Required: 60 minutes.

When marking the Writing section of the test, examiners use detailed assessment criteria which describe written and spoken performance at each of the 9 IELTS bands.

Examiners give a band score for each of the 4 areas: Task Achievement (for Task 1), Task Response (for Task 2), Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. These 4 are given equal-weighted.

The writing component consists of 2 parts–one is Academic and the other one is General. Most students opt for the Academic pattern which is a bit tough, but in the General IELTS, the Candidate has to undergo Letter writing session. Task 2 carries more weightage in your final band score than Task 1.

Remember: illegible handwriting will reduce your final score.

Time Required: 60 minutes.

Examiners award a band score for each of the 4 criterion areas: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. These 4 get equal weightage.

There are three parts of the test and is in the form of an interview. The interview will most probably seem like a friendly conversation that typically covers some aspects of your past, present, and future situations.

Time Required: 11 to 14 minutes

The test has 40 questions. The listening materials are recorded on a cassette tape/CD/DVD and you will get a chance to hear it just once. When the recorded material ends you will have just 10 minutes to copy your answers into the answer sheet.

Time Required: 30 minutes

IELTS: Some Frequently Asked Questions with Their Answers (FAQs)

Canada has two official languages and it’s essential to have the skills in either or both for acceptance into the Canadian job market and society though it’s not a mandatory requirement.

Knowledge of the language gives one a good footing in the nation, and helps him mix well, without having to struggle while communicating. A Canadian recruiter will obviously prefer a person who isn’t handicapped on the communication front. Similarly, a Canadian educational establishment will accept ONLY those who have the necessary language skills.

Given all this it’s important that you not only have the necessary language skills but also prove that you have it through appearing for the language proficiency test meant for it. In the case of the English language, it’s the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) that’s most widely used to prove your language skills.

For creating your Express Entry profile, it’s mandatory to submit your IELTS language test result report. You will get the highest of 28 points on language if you have an average IELTS Test score of 9.0. You will get a maximum of 160 points, without a spouse, on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) if you perform very well on this aspect and get an average of not less than 9.0 bands.

IELTSstands for International English Language Testing System which is one of the most widely accepted scores for language skills in countries like the USA, UK, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia, and other parts of the world as well.

This test evaluates a candidate based on –

  1. Reading ability
  2. Writing ability
  3. Speaking ability and
  4. Listening ability.

The score is given between 0 to 9 where 0 is the lowest band and 9 being the highest band given to the experts in the language.

A good IELTS score can be 6 or 7 which depict that the candidate is competent in the language and have proficiency in the same. Many universities and other institutes in the countries mentioned above, look for the score in this range.

Again it depends on your choice. If you want to migrate to Canada, mention Canada; if you want to migrate to Australia, mention Australia.

Yes, you can! Though changes to your IELTS total do occur, don’t expect a jump of a band or more as it’s uncommon, even as you won’t get better results in the Listening or Reading papers of the exam as such cases are rare.

CLB stands for the Canadian Language Benchmarks. These are the national standards used in the nation for describing, measuring and recognizing the English-language proficiency of adult immigrants and soon-to-be immigrants, for residing and doing a job in the nation. While the CLB employs a scale of 1 to 12 points to decide language level, s the IELTS test has a score of 1 to 9 for every specific skill segment.

The 4 components are:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking
  • Listening.

IELTS Syllabus includes different sections – Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The complete test duration is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Listening: The total length of this section is 30 minutes and it’s divided into 4 parts. Candidates have to answer different kinds of 40 questions.

Reading: The reading section comprises of three texts of general interest that deals with subjects which are appropriate for applicants about to enrol for a post-graduate or undergraduate program. The total time for this section is 30 minutes and it comprises of 40-odd questions.

But if you manage to get an average score of 9.0, you will be considered an expert user with full, native-like fluency – both in creating the language and fiuring it out.

Yes, for Express Entry (EE) and some Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), it’s! However, if you get very low IELTS score, it doesn’t mean you won’t necessarily get an Invitation to Apply (ITA) or that the door to Canada immigration has been shut for you. A low IELTS score though will affect your total Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, in the process, weakening your immigration chances.

You can try the PNP route as most PNPs accept applicants with even low IELTS scores. Some don’t even require IELTS Test results.

Yes, you can take the exam online! Timing and format for both the test are same. However, just the form of giving exam is dissimilar.

For an online exam, the writing task is relatively easier. The reason: you het a chance to rewrite and edit the sentences here. In an offline test, you have to first draft the answer and afterwards write the final one.

An additional benefit of an online test is that you get the result of the test inside just 13 days, while it may take clsoe to 6 weeks to get the result of the offline test.

Evaluation for both the versions is completely different. While your answers get saved in the system to be uploaded automatically to the Cambridge server; your offline sheet is collected by the examiner only to later send it to the Cambridge facility.
